Really see the U.S. - by NOT flying
Submitted by Wanderlust Andi
Touring the country? Flying is not the only option when traveling in the U.S. There are five other travel methods you may find to be even more enjoyable than flying. Whether you hate the cattle-car feeling of today's airlines, are afraid of flying, or just looking for a little adventure, consider these alternate transportation options.
The road trip is a tradition that allows a lot of flexibility and a chance to explore areas along the route. And, depending on gas prices, driving is usually the cheapest form of transportation - especially if multiple people are traveling. The downside is, of course, that you must drive - until the self-drive cars are available to all.
Train travel will also allow you to see the passing countryside, although without the luxury of being able to stop on a whim - although Amtrack does have rail passes where you can take as many rides as you wish in a 15, 30 or 45 day period. There are also trains that allow you to take your car with you - a bit of the best of both worlds, for a price.
Choosing a bus opens some possibilities that trains don't allow. You still see the passing scenery plus buses go just about everywhere for very reasonable - and sometimes plain cheap- prices! The seats are definitely more comfortable than any non-first-class plane seat, and you have WiFi.
The last two options - biking and hitch-hiking- will require the most effort, but offer the biggest possibility of connecting with other people.
Happy travels!
